JUSTINE AUTOUR NAMED PRO BONO FINALIST IN WOMEN IN LAW AWARDS

Women in Law Awards

Colin Biggers & Paisley insurance lawyer, Justine Autour, has been named as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards in the pro bono category.

The Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award “recognises individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the community over FY2015 via at least one significant pro bono initiative.”

In the last year, Ms Autour has led Colin Biggers & Paisley’s involvement in three major pro bono projects which are principally focused in the area of human rights. The clients in these projects are Amnesty International Australia, the International Centre for Advocates Against Discrimination and Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation.

Her work with the Kaleidoscope project, in particular, involves producing a guide to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) advocates better understand how the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights applies to human rights violations suffered by LGBTI people in the Asia Pacific region, and how it can be used as a tool to hold accountable states that perpetrate and/or allow such violations to occur. Given that just one third of the 77 countries that criminalise homosexuality have ratified the United Nations’ protocol allowing individuals to bring a human rights violation complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee, this work forms an important part of the fight to protect LGBTI human rights around the world.

In October of this year, Ms Autour was named as the Colin Biggers & Paisley Foundation’s Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year in recognition of her outstanding commitment to pro bono legal services. According to managing partner Dunstan de Souza, Ms Autour is wholly deserving of this award: “She has committed to a number of significant pro bono projects and currently holds the highest number of pro bono hours of any of our lawyers, as well as being a great champion of the Foundation’s work. I have no doubt that she is a strong candidate for the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards.”
