BRISBANE, SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE PEOPLE CELEBRATE NAIDOC WEEK WITH PRIVATE SCREENINGS OF GURRUMUL

July 26,2018
This year, NAIDOC Week ran from 8 – 15 July. NAIDOC Week originally began as a single day (the long title is National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) until awareness and interest in the cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples grew in the early nineties. Today, NAIDOC Week is a national celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This year’s theme was “Because of her, we can!”

To celebrate NAIDOC Week and to promote Colin Biggers & Paisley’s commitment to protecting the legal and cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, we held screenings of Gurrumul in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Gurrumul is the life story of Dr G. Yunupingu – a Yolngu man (North East Arnhem Land) and Aria Award winning artist. Dr G. was a multi-instrumentalist who was born blind, but whose talents saw him travel the world and perform for public figures, including Prince William and Barack Obama.

The screenings, which were attended by almost 200 CBP people and their clients, friends and family, also acted as fundraising initiatives for our Artists in the Black Challenge and helped to raise more than $4,000 of our $50,000 fundraising goal for the Arts Law Centre of Australia.
