THE COLIN BIGGERS & PAISLEY FOUNDATION TO HOST ROUNDTABLE ON LGBTI HATE CRIME LAWS

August 04,2016
On Thursday, 18 August 2016, the Colin Biggers & Paisley Foundation will be collaborating with the Human Rights Law Centre to host the LGBTI Hate Crime Expert Roundtable for its key advocates, including Victoria police and academics. The event will be held at Colin Biggers & Paisley's Melbourne office.

There is a growing concern among LGBTI community organisations in Victoria that, in practice, the existing hate crime legislation in Victoria is not able to effectively combat LGBTI motivated hate crime. This event will address those concerns and aims to generate understanding of current responses to hate violence/prejudice motivated crimes against LGBTI people in Victoria. It will also aim to identify and implement improvements in line with international best practices.

Colin Biggers & Paisley has also agreed to assist the Human Rights Law Centre with legal research (key legislation) ahead of the roundtable. Team members include Andrew Murray, Partner; Johanna Denbigh, Special Counsel;  Alex O'Brien, Legal Trainee; Candice Fraser, Senior Paralegal and Sammy Brown, Secretary.

This team will support the Human Rights Law Centre in its attempt to reform Victorian law and develop responses which can be used as a model Australia wide.
